Radical Faithfulness

This summer I took my little cousin down to San Diego to tour the retired USS Midway naval ship. We were blown away by the size of the anchors, whose chains weighed an impressive 156 pounds per link. When combined, the entire weight of the anchor plus chain adds up to be around twenty tons.

The writer of Hebrews wrote these words, "So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf..." (Hebrews 6:17-20).

The anchor to our souls rests in the unchanging faithfulness of God's promises and character as perfectly demonstrated through the work of Jesus. God's faithfulness has been on display for all of eternity: past, present, and future. And at the center of His faithfulness, is the fulfillment of all of His promises in Jesus. Jesus, who is God's eternal Word that took on flesh in human form, laid His life down as a final sin sacrifice for mankind, rose from the grave by the Spirit of God three days later, ALSO entered into the Holy of Holy's not made by human hands but in the presence of God Himself in order to act as our final high priest and mediator.

It is through Jesus that we get to experience the radical faithfulness of God--a God whose promises are always "Yes" and "Amen" (2 Corinthians 1:20). We can rest assured, that even through the unfaithfulness of mankind (including, at times, you and I) God's eternal plan cannot be thwarted (Job 42:2).
