The Goodness of God

The best things of this world--joy, love, kindness, celebration, community, etc--are truly not of this world but come from the Source of all that is good.

There's a reason that even a world that rejects the one true living God uses terms such as, "That sounds heavenly" or "It was out of this world". At our core, we know that the best parts of this world, just can't be of this world. That's because, they aren't.

Inspired by the Spirit of God, King David wrote these words in a song while praising God for a victory that only God could give him, "Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!" (Psalms 34:8).

Though David was a King and chosen leader of the Isrealites, with access to all the power, glory, and riches this world could throw at him, he pointed true goodness as being God Himself.

James, the half brother of Jesus, wrote to the goodness of God at a theological level in James 1:17, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." In other words, the source of what is truly good and perfect, exclusively belongs to the very nature and existence of God--neither of which can ever change.

While some who reject God, might be tempted to attribute the good things in their life to their own hard work and determination, even those people exist and benefit because of the goodness of God. "For he (God) makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45).

But though the general blessings of God such as life, order in the universe, and sustenance are available to all to enjoy, there will come a time when only those who place their faith in God through the work of Jesus, will receive eternal access to the goodness of God in the very presence of God himself. When that day comes, those who rejected God, His Son, or His Spirit, will be forever cut off from the only true source of what is good, from God Himself. 

So accept the fruit of God's Spirit of goodness today, while there is still time! "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near" (Isaiah 55:6).
