God's Faithfulness

As discussed last week, God's faithfulness--seen through His unchanging character, his unfailing promises, and his fulfillment of promises through Christ--serves as the "steadfast anchor of the soul" for those who walk with Him (Hebrews 6:17-20).

When I look at a boat whose anchor has been let down, I still see an object that, at surface level, is capable of drifting back and forth, up and down and side to side. Despite the movement up top however, the boat is still secured to its overall location, because of the anchor below. 

The same can be said about our soul. As a follower of Christ, we still experience the impact of life's waves that toss us around a bit. And yet, our salvation remains secure because of the anchor preventing us from total displacement. That anchor is God's faithfulness, not our own faithfulness. While it is faith that saves us, it is "by faith of Jesus Christ" that we are justified (Galatians 2:16, Romans 3:22, Philippians 3:9, KJV).

Our faith, if we're honest, ebbs and flows with the waves around us at times. One day we are on fire for the LORD, the next we are filled with doubt. One moment we are rooted in the Spirit, the next we drift off a bit in the flesh. Thank God our salvation does not depend on our perfect faithfulness, but HIS. 

2 Timothy 2:13 teaches that even "if we are faithless, he remains faithful--for he cannot deny himself." God's immoveable, steadfast faithfulness does not depend upon our perfect obedience, perfect faith, or perfect performance. So what does this do for us?

Well, to know that our salvation is dependent upon a perfectly faithful God, is to know total peace. Though our bodies, like the boat, might get roughed up a bit in this life, we can rest in total peace knowing that the anchor of our soul--the assurance of our salvation--depends on a fully dependable God. A God whose faithfulness cannot be thwarted by human tendency. And next week, we will look at how the faithfulness of God differs from the faithlessness of mankind.
